There’s a small chance Drake could deliver his Certified Lover Boy album at midnight on Friday (August 28). According to an Instagram post from DJ Akademiks, if Drake doesn’t deliver the project, he won’t be eligible for the 2021 Grammy Awards.
“Tomorrow will be the last Friday in the eligibility period for the 2021 63rd Grammys,” he wrote. “This one of the main factors in the speculation building that Drake may release an album tonight. Any projects release after this Friday will be eligible for nominations for 2022 Grammys.”
Certified Lover Boy will mark Drake’s sixth studio album and follow-up to 2018’s double album Scorpion. The multiplatinum-selling artist has already shared one single from the project called “Laugh Now Cry Later” featuring Lil Durk. The song stirred up some controversy online after fans determined Durk was dissing Tekashi 6ix9ine with the line, “I’m in the trenches, relax/Can you not play that lil’ boy in the club? ‘Cause we do not listen to rats.”
As the online chatter continued, Durk fueled the flames by addressing the line on Instagram — albeit covertly.
He wrote in the caption, “Please do not play that lil Boi in the club cause we do not listen to rats” alongside a photo of himself laughing.
Among the chief complaint about the song was that Durk’s verse wasn’t long enough. But according to Durk, COVID-19 prevented the verse from being more robust. He told Complex during the course of a one-day session, he actually recorded two or three different verses for the song.
Shortly after Drake teased some Certified Lover Boy merch, more of the Canadian artist’s Nike-branded merch for the album has surfaced.
This time around, Drake posted on his Instagram Stories a look at some of the packages he and his team have been sending out. Aside from the simply branded white cap with a lipstick print on the brim are shirts marked boldly with “Certified Lover Boy” and an illustration of cupid in a ski mask. Despite the recent teasers, it is still unclear if the merch will see an official release or if it is part of Drake’s ongoing partnership with Nike.
Take a look at Drake’s newly surfaced Certified Lover Boy merch below.
Drizzy wore some correlating Nike merchandise in the music video for his newest single "Laugh Now, Cry Later," then showed off some other branded pieces including a cap with a red lipstick mark on it and socks with hearts on the top. On Wednesday the OVO head honcho dropped some more gems on his Instagram Stories, showing people receiving hefty care packages
Some of the newly revealed pieces include a Nike bomber jacket with hearts pressed across the body, the gray hoodie he was wearing in the music video with "CLB" inscribed on the chest, and what looks to be a shirt with a cupid in a ski mask.
On April 9, 2019, Drake first announced that he was working on a new album during his Assassination Vacation Tour in London. On June 2019, Drake teased his progress on the album via Instagram, where the caption read: "Album mode". Drake officially announced his sixth studio album just hours before the release of Dark Lane Demo Tapes, scheduled for release in the summer of 2020.[2] On July 29, longtime engineer Noel Cadastre revealed that the album is "90% done".[3] On August 14, Drake announced the title of the album.[4]
